I'm sorry for this odd request because it might get to you too urgent but it's because of the situation of things right now.
I'm stuck in London,England with my family right now, we are here on a short vacation then I was robbed, worse of it is that bags, cash and cards and my cell phone was stolen at GUN POINT, it's such a crazy experience for us, we need help flying back home, the authorities are not being 100% supportive but the good thing is we still have our passports and return tickets but currently having troubles paying off the hotel bills and also getting a cab to take us to the airport.

Hi All

I just have a quick question. I have a site I am working on where I tried creating a seperate file for javascript and attaching it to the html page. However, when I loaded the page, the javascript wouldn't work correctly. I tried coping the code directly into the html page without referencing the page, and it worked fine. I am just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and why it might happen. I didn't change any of the code, simply copied and pasted from the javascript file.

Hi, its just because of your External .JS file, if you see the error message details, you will see this error "Object expected", it means that you have changed the address or URL of your JS file, check this before checking other parts of your code.

dude, what do you mean by "custom search box"?
a text-input form control? a select form control?
the "right way" is the way of Web Standards yo, so you would really be writing markup instead of code, but either way and to confuse this just a wee bit more, it's also going to be depending on your "designed background". You can style the living shit out of forms and form controls, but there are a few caveats that you simply cannot do with CSS. JavaScript's might can and should be used for Progressive Enhancements, which this designed background may very well fall under, but like i said, idk until i see what you're talking about yo. You gotta screenshot?

First, I would recommend deciding on your project's specs: Ajax is client-side AND server-side. also, depending on how you define Ajax in your application, it's more than just JavaScript.
Idk anything about JavaFx specifically, but I do know that Java is *best* kept server-side, if that. Yes, you can do anything with Java, but she's slow and bulky and her time in the limelight has passed (for now).
Combine the advantages of Flash and Ajax? Flash has "Ajax" functionality already, it has for quite awhile. I'm assuming by Ajax you mean interacting with the server after the user has performed an action and returning content/media, etc., without refreshing the page. Yeah, Flash has that yo.
Flash's time has passed (for now) as well; Anything you want to do in Flash can be done in JavaScript, except that when done in JavaScript, you get all the added bonuses of being non-proprietary, the programming language of the browser, as well as the SEO benefits that are non existent in Flash. Furthermore, you can utilize JavaScript as the Progressive Enhancement default weapon - force the browsers/media(s) to understand your markup/styles/code, make them bend to you.
I'll go even further here: You can do this all, entirely in JavaScript; client-side, server-side, the whole 9 yards yo. You're going to need a JSlib or framework for the fx you want; sounds like you could use Raphael.js/YUI.js/ and/or the super awesome jQuery. If this is a massive application, I highly recommend rolling your jQuery into a modular, object-oriented JavaScript framework, like Dojo. You can tie Dojo or whatever you choose to use into node.js, which is the best thing to happen to this world since the sun came up. Node.js was built for the V8 JavaScript Engine (think really, really, really, uber fast), its an I/O framework that has most specifically been used to build web servers. Yes, web servers. Web servers that are literally lightning speed compared to Apache (sorry Apache) and that will (I shit you not) become the default standard in due time. That is, unless a better JavaScript server gets written. Or rather, until it is.
So this is alot of information, but check it out yo, this is where node.js really nails it. YOU DON'T HAVE TO LEARN MORE THAN ONE LANGUAGE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO RELY ON THIRD PARTY and/or personnel to support you, you can do it all on your own, because it's the same language. sure, the techniques are different, but it's not like learning a new trix is anywhere as difficult as learning a new language.
Plus, it's entirely/completely/magnificently open-source. You can go to github right now and fork the entire application you are trying to get done, albeit not in one piece, but still.
JavaScript is the future. JavaScript is right now!!!!! Blowin' up all around us, but virtually the entire community is either clueless or in denial.

Flash and Java are great programming languages and have their uses, however they do not lie in the realm of cutting edge web development. At least for now.

What happens when you run the 2006 version? Does it also show the same
problem now (and didn't in 2006)?

If so, what in your environment has changed in the mean time? (E.g. browser

I don't have any example, but I do have a comment.

When you talk about maintaining master and detail records, you are
presumably talking about persisting the information, probably in a database.

As such, you need a server-based solution. This might use JavaScript for
some aspects, but the JavaScript involvement would be minor.

There are lots of server interaction facilities ... ASP, ASP.NET, Ajax, PHP,
etc. Which one you choose to use will be up to personal preference and also
what is supported on your web server.

When you search the Internet for information on web server facilities, you
will probably also find examples that come fairly close to the system you
want to create.

Seeing you're talking about master/detail, it is possible that an
interactive solution would be more suitable (i.e. select the master and it
populates the detail information immediately). This would lead me towards
ASP.NET or Ajax rather than ASP (classic) or PHP. However, a difference
design would work fine with the less interactive facilities, and I'm also
sure there are many others out there that are not springing immediately to
mind.

[JavaScript] DHTML: Can someone get me in the right direction?

Back in 2002 I hired a programmer to create a drop down navigation for me. I updated it when I needed to and stopped using it in 2006

I recently updated the code however, I'm having one problem that I believe relates to the JS.

The drop down (for each section) is showing up on the left side of the screen. I am unsure of where or what code to change to move it so that it shows up under the correct place in the nav bar.

Can you help me figure out how and where I need to go to make the dhtml work correctly?

[JavaScript] multi-column drop down menu

I have searched high and low for a way to display multiple columns in a drop down menu in a nice looking grid type display. There is a jquery plugin called multi-colselect but I can't get that to work. Does anyone know of another script out there?

[JavaScript] Can Anyone Help With CSS Problem Please .....?

I have used "A Great CSS Horizontal Drop-Down Menu" scripting by Tedd Sperling on my website and it is working very well indeed. I have tried altering various items in the thirst for knowledge and have been impressed with how quickly I have or are becoming acquainted with it.

I contacted the author who emailed back saying that he doesn't have the time to help.

One slight problem that I am experiencing and this is nothing to do with the scripting as such. Because I have so many drop down menus on my website:

[JavaScript] Multiple Auto Expire Script

I am not that familiar with JavaScript, just enough that I can piece
together a script when looking at some examples that are similar to what
I want. However, I have reached a snag. I am working on a script that
I can have a list of multiple upcoming events, and the JavaScript go
through them and when it finds the one that should currently be shown,
displays it. I have the script working if I have only one event in the
code for it to parse, but I am wanting to avoid having to edit the code

[JavaScript] Difficulty with drop down menu scripting

My name is James and I am new to the group.

I have been revamping my website and have introduced an horizontal multilevel drop down menu to it, but I am having some difficulty in trying to get the scripting to do what I wish.

Having obtained the basic scripting under the GNU licence, I wrote to the author who hasn't either had time to write to me or is just not bothered.

I wonder if someone on this group would be willing to help me please ?

I don't know if I mam allowed to advertise my website on this group so I will not both yet until I find out.

[JavaScript] Need help with AJAX autosuggest textfield and JavaScript events

Hello,
I'm kinda a newbie when it comes to AJAX but I have just completed my first Autosuggest text field for a website that I am working on. You can see an example of it here:

It will display a list of US states when you type in a letter to the text box. I would suggest you use the letter `M' as it is the best example.

So far everything is working well but the next step I am having problems with. I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SELECT ONE OF THE STATES WITH EITHER THE ARROW KEYS OR MOUSE CLICK AND HAVE THE SELECTED STATE SHOW UP IN THE TEXT FIELD.

I know this can be accomplished by using JavaScript events but I am uncertain of how to go about doing this..??? if anyone has any suggestions on how I can accomplish this I would deeply appreciate the info! THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!

I actually did find a solution, in part with the help of a fellow in another forum.

I rephrased the question to him this way: I have three items of data in an array, "huey," "dewey," and "louie." The object of the exercise to to generate a page that, when loaded, clears, and then displays "huey" for a short interval. After that interval passes, "huey" is replaced with "dewey." After another interval, "dewey" is replaced with "louie," and when the latter expires, the who thing begins again, without interference from a user/operator.

The guy showed me some HTML that used <div> and some CSS to establish a container. It also contained a script in which a kiosk object is created. The kiosk object contained several methods, including one with a timer, and one with a mechanism to keep track of who the next "duck" to be displayed is.

Using his example as a sample of something that works, I combined it with all of the coding I had already done to build something with all of the functionality I needed.

For development purposes, I added a script section that contained hard-coded arrays filled with sample data-- something on the order of 30-40 rows worth. I also used global variables in this section to define "behavioral variables"-- the content of report headers, the path to company logo graphics, and parameters to control lines per page and refresh intervals for both pages and the entire site.

On loading, the computes how many pages are needed based on the array size and the stated rows per page, and then displays the first n rows. The report has a nice header and data is color-coded on the basis of information in the data arrays. After the page interval expires, pages advance, and then repeat. The site-refresh interval specified in the variables above is converted to maximum page change iterations, and logic then forces a refresh the number of page rotations have exceeded the max value.

This left me with a static page that demonstrated all of the functionality I wanted. To actually make the data "live" I did the following.

I edited the HTML to include two comments, one  and the other . Alpha was inserted just before the declarations for all of my behavior-control variables and data arrays. Zulu was placed just after them. Then I set to writing the server-side PHP.

When called, the PHP code opens up the HMTL module (just described) and treats it like a template. It reads every line out of the template and delivers it to the client verbatim until, that is, the "alpha" comment is detected.

The PHP continues to read lines out of the template, but does not echo them to the client until "zulu" is reached. This portion of the template contains the statically-coded arrays and such, so I discard that data.

When "zulu" is reached, I open a connection to Mysql, perform the query I want, format the data as necessary, and then present it to the client as javascript variable declarations. These declarations, created on the fly, replace the static ones from the template.

When this is done, I close my connection to mysql and resume echoing lines out of the the template.

All in all, it ends up being much more difficult to describe than to actually do.

Have you thought of storing all the data in the browser, then have
JavaScript retrieve each page locally? Of course, the feasibility of
this depends on how much data you think could be downloaded at once. Of
course, you could limit the size of the download to, say, 1,000 rows.

Have you checked for jquery plugins that may fit your needs? (jquery.com)

I recently had a need for a fairly advanced js popup and found exactly what I needed there. There are many plug-ins available...I think the solution that I went with was called fancybox, or fancy lightbox. It was very easy to implement and fully customizable. You could also look at Likno Web Modal Builder...3rd party program that lets you build modal popups from GUI. Very simple, but a little limited, and I think you have to pay to actually implement it into your site.

[JavaScript] Question RE Kiosk Application... Rotate Multiple pages with only one refresh?

I'm experimenting with a Kiosk application and could use the advice of someone more experienced than I in Javascript/HTML.

I've built an Ubuntu server with a full LAMP stack. A MySQL database collects production information. My goal is to set up a web-based kiosk to periodically query the database and display live summary information.

Right now, I have the application working this way: When the kiosk/client connects to my server URL, a PHP script executes. The PHP gets information from MySQL and builds a web page, which is sent to the the browser on the client side. I make use of the meta refresh tag to cause the web page to automatically reload itself periodically. When it does, this re-executes the PHP script on the server, which hits the database again for the latest information, and refreshes the page. In short, it all works just fine.

Here's my problem: The information I am trying to display may occupy more than one page, and the whole point of the kiosk eliminate the need to touch a keyboard or mouse. The only way I can think of to deal with this issue is to use an $id=$_GET['id']; type construct so that when the first page's refresj times out, it requests page two. When page two times out, it requests page three, and so on. When the refresh on the last page times out, it would ask for page 1 again. From a user standpoint, the pages should rotate with some frequency... say every 30 seconds... to prevent users from having to wait around too long to see the whole data set.

However, this solution creates a whole slew of new problems, particularly with regard to scaleability. At the stated frequency, I end up hitting the server 120 times in an hour. If I have ten kiosks installed, even if they are all displaying the same info, the server/database is being hit 1200 times an hour. This is an awful lot of bandwidth and database queries to display whose volatility is such that an hourly refresh would be *more* than adequate.

The question, then, is there a way to auto-refesh a web page, say hourly, (to download all the data it needs at once) but code it so that the browser can rotate through a series of pages at 30-second intervals?

I suspect there might be a way to do this with javascript, but I'm not sure where to begin. Google searches are of limited help at the moment, because I'm not even sure how to frame the question in a search-engine-friendly format.

Ideally, someone has done something similar before, and could suggest a URL with code snippets. Thanks in advance for our help.

Hi Tim

That code is straight from the quackit web site, including the setTimeout
call of init, which is there to give the page time to finish loading before
the call to init.

The setTimeout will only call init once. (It's setInterval that would call
it multiple times.) After the first call, the marquee code itself uses
further setTimeout calls to keep itself going.

Using FireFox and looking at their JavaScript page
http://www.quackit.com/javascript/codes/javascript_scroll.cfm I get fairly
non-nice behaviour. The right-to-left scroll stops working after one or two
passes and the left-to-right scroll cuts off 3/4 of the way across the
coloured bar, but it does seem to keep scrolling forever.

There is no time limit that I can see in the parameters. A quick look
through the JS code doesn't show any time limit either, or any reason why
the timer would stop running. So, I suspect that the text gets "stuck"
somewhere where it's not visible, due to a bug in the code (which is quite
large at ~ 500 lines).

So, if it's a nuisance, you'll need to find another scroller, or devote the
time to debug the code.

Have you reported the problem to the author? After all, quackit has a web
site and is therefore clearly proud of its code and presumably would be
interested in problem reports. Send them your whole HTML and any associated
JS files - preferably from a cut-down page that demonstrates just the
problem - plus full information about the browsers and their levels that
you've seen this on.

Also, PLEASE, when you contact them don't say "It appears that the message
stops scrolling after a fixed interval ...". That's meaningless. Is it
seconds, minutes, hours or days? Give detailed information. Also, count
the number of repetitions of the scroll before it stops, That might be
important. But at least let them know how long they need to wait before
they know they haven't encountered the same problem as you.

There are packages that just convert documents to PDF much like a
printer driver. Check software at Amazon.

FYI tho - most of these programs cost about 50% of the the price of an
Adobe Acrobat Upgrade or Educational version if you can qualify.

Absolutely, there are several. Do a Google search and you'll find them.

However, my own favourite is one called Cute PDF Writer. It's freeware, and
installs as a printer on your computer. It's at
http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp and I've never had it
fail to produce good output.

It needs a converter too. They suggest Ghostscript and that's the one I
use, there are links on the Cute PDF site.

There are packages that just convert documents to PDF much like a
printer driver. Check software at Amazon.

FYI tho - most of these programs cost about 50% of the the price of an
Adobe Acrobat Upgrade or Educational version if you can qualify.

The conditionals now work.

And the function updatePage(buttonName)works IF what you're trying to do is change information on the SAME PAGE. This page is the "second page"-- the page called by the Home Page.

Now for the real problem:

The Home page cotains a (splash screen) graphic followed by the same menu buttons. I want to be able to click on one of those buttons and:

1) Change the url to the "second page"
2) Have the same menu come up (properly highlighted to reflect the selection)
3) Enable the same changes that the function UpdatePage(buttonName) implemented.

So I wrote a function changePage(buttonName) that based on which conditional it passes:
1) Changes the url (to a page that looks very much like the page you came from except that the menu in question is moved up the page)
2) Calls the function updatePage(buttonName) which is supposed to make the same changes to this "second page" that it made to the same page when activated from that page.

It doesn't work. The url changes, but UpdatePage is never called and none of the alerts after UpdatePage() appear.

Can a JavaScript function CHANGE A URL AND MAKE CHANGES TO THE NEW PAGE (based on the argument passed)?

[JavaScript] _Javascript simple problem

Seems a simple enough problem, one that most websites do, but I'm having a
problem:

When a button is clicked on the home page (index.html) I want:
A) another page to come up and
B) display the correct information (based on the button clicked).

To do so I'm passing an argument containing the name of the button to a
javascript function that should:
a) Bring up the new page
AND, BASED ON WHAT IS PASSED TO IT WILL:
b) Cause the correct information to be displayed in the frame by activating the
routine: MM_setTextOfLayer('TrailingSubText','','<iframe
align="top" frameborder="1" height="422"
width="644" src="website programming.htm"
>\n</iframe>')

What happens is that:
- the function is accessed
- The following alerts show up:
- "0" [in response to alert("This is the " & buttonName); ]
- "This is after a."
- "This is the b" [in response to alert("This is the b"); ]
- "This is after b."

QUESTIONS:
- Why is the code in both if statements being activated (when only one should
respond)?
- Why isn't the MM_setTextOfLayer... routine being activated?
- How can the problem be solved?

[JavaScript] Issue with setSelectionRange in FF

I am using the setSelectionRange JavaScipt function in Firefox to find a
given string.
If we are on aa multi page textaea, it seems to be working fine. But if the
searched text falls in a page other that currently displayed page, the
cursor(focus) doesn't really jump to that particular page.

Any clue ?

In order to load it in the same page you would either (1) need to download
the full-resolution of all the pictures at the time the page was loaded
initially (not a good idea) or (2) use a dynamic system, such as AJAX, I
believe.

An alternative is not to load it in the same page, but to load it in a page
that has the same URL and looks pretty much the same (i.e. a recursive call
of the page to itself). This would have an area up the top or somewhere
that is only filled if a thumbnail has been clicked.

What specific difficulties are you having implementing this?

DON'T do the computations in JavaScript. Instead, submit the page with a
request to move the elements. When the server is done, it sends the new
page via a standard HTTP response. Magically, everything will show up in
the new position at once.

I have a page with quite a few elements in it. At one point, I need to recalculate the position of everything, element by element. The computations are a bit lengthy, so it looks like the page is being repainted, element by element. Of course, it is, but it doesn't look good. It would be better if the screen were frozen while everything was being updated, and then was refreshed when everything is ready. How can I do that?

There's a very simple solution to this, and it has nothing to do with JavaScript. Simply grab the title bar of the annoying screen, and move it until 99% of it is hidden below the bottom of the screen.

I also can't click on or work with the main window while the popup is active unless I shut the popup window down. I usually leave the popup on all the time just minimize it and keep browsing the web normally but now it won't let me!!! help :(

Sounds as though you've changed something in the code. Can you go back to a
backup and either put that in or do a code comparison to check what has
changed?

If not, then you'll need to post the appropriate code - i.e. the code that
creates the popup and all the code from the popup.

[JavaScript] Simple string validation

I am learning JS and have been asked to write a function that prompts a user to choose a new user ID that is between 6-14 characters long and contains no spaces. The function should test the user's input and alert the user that a) the ID is valid, or b) the ID is too short, too long or contains spaces. The function should loop until the user either enters a valid password or clicks Cancel. It needs to use a do while loop.

This is what I've come up with below but this is what my teacher tells me and I am totally confused:

The error generated is because you algorithm has called yourid.length when there is nothing in yourid because you have click cancel.

Your algorithm here doesn't function correctly because once you find an error you ask for a new id but don't check all 3 properties again (short, long, spaces).

You should keep track of whether an error has been made and if so go to the next iteration in the do while loop and start again with a prompt. There should only be one prompt per loop iteration ata maximum.

Instead of using a for loop look up the indexOf function. This would be a better choice than the charAt function.

The following code isn't valid as it doesn't follow the correct syntax.

I did this but it seems the latest "ScriptptForest"
has some problems in IE8, well it is with my pages.

I have another ScroptForest menu on a few pages that
I made with the latest version of the software.

I have found that it sometimes has problems in IE8

OK, just having a look at how this works.

The file sfmenutmp4ns.js has a lot of the control code for the Netscape (FF,
Chrome, etc) version of the menu system. It has a function called
"tmp4hideblocks" which is called after a timed wait when you remove the
hover. Its purpose is to do the delayed removal of the menu list.

Now, it actually does all this by "long-hand" - having a separate bit of
code for each of the menu items (numbered 0 to 7). For the items with
numbers 0 and 7 (which are your "home" and "help files" items), there is
only half as much code as for the other items. This would account for the
fact that it removes the highlight of the button but doesn't remove the
drop-down list.

Now, this is fine for 0 ("home") because it doesn't drop down, but it's not
fine for 7 ("help files") which does drop down.

The file sfmenutmp4ie.js also has a function called "tmp4hideblocks" which
is very similar to the NS one and does the same thing for IE. It has
exactly the same problem for the item with number 7.

Why? From the little bit of Googling I've done, I suspect that the
intention is that menus will be generated using some sort of dedicated menu
generator for this menu product. I assume that this generator generates all
three files - the array file and the NS and IE files - plus a large lump of
HTML to go in the main file. As such, it is going to be a real hit and miss
affair to try to add or significantly change menu items without using this
generator.

The IE and NS files are quite long - containing probably more than 500 lines
of JS code (although this has been compressed by the removal of almost all
the line-feeds). Attempting to make sure that they cater properly for the
an extra button (or changed functionality for that button) will definitely
not be a trivial affair. Far easier to re-create the menu using the tools
provided.

The only problem I am getting is if you put mouse over "help files"
and then move to a non menu part of the screen the drop down
stays open... I get this in Firefox and IE8

I'm getting anomalous behaviour under FF, Chrome and IE6 too, but it doesn't
quite match your description.

On most menus ...

- Hover over - drops down and the menu "button" itself is highlighted.

- Move the mouse to another menu item - closes the previous item and removes
the highlight and opens the new item.

- Move the mouse to a non-menu part of the screen - closes the open item and
removes the highlight after about 1.5 seconds.

On the "Help files" item ...

- Hover over - same as above.

- Move the mouse to another menu item - same as above.

- Move the mouse to a non-menu part of the screen - removes the highlight
after about 1.5 seconds but does not close the open item until you move the
mouse back over a menu item.

Does this match what you're seeing in IE8?

Not sure what you are saying here. Are you having trouble with the software
since you downloaded the new version, or are you having trouble adding new
buttons?

Please tell us in which way the new version of the software is giving you
trouble. Also which are the new buttons that you are adding?

Hi all,

about 3 years ago a got a copy of the above software to make the
menus on my site. About 1 year ago I made the mistake of downloading
the latest version without saving my old copy. The software has
changed and I have problems with it under IE8.

So I have been trying to edit the 3 files to add new buttons
The problem I have now is the far right button was not a drop
down and I have managed to make it drop down but it will not
drop back after hover over.

I have a little issue. How does the ajax makes request? Does it send headers and data same time or first sends headers and then data/parameters?
If it sends both separately , does it mean that if we don't close connection, we may send parameters again with headers already sent?
